Something about Silhouettes

There is something elegant about a silhouette. The classic silhouette art and most recognized was used for portraits - side profiles of ladies during the turn of the century. These silhouettes were typically black placed on a lighter background. When used in jewelry, they appeared in cameo broaches, pins, and necklaces.

The modern silhouette is just as elegant but takes on a more modern appeal, especially since silhouettes can now be adhered directly to your wall. Silhouettes for your children's room add a certain charm and contemporary touch. Some of the silhouettes are somewhat whimsical with interesting pattern filling the silhouette's shape.

Silhouettes can also be appealing in other areas of your home. One great example is the chandelier pictured below. Place a chandelier where one would not be expected and you have something interesting and charming on your wall.

There are numerous silhouettes to select from and they all have that elegant aspect on your wall.

Magical Modern Walls

Moving away from the traditional opens the door to vast array of modern design ideas. Perhaps the traditional must remain true to what is considered "traditional", but the modern remains open to anything and everything that simply has not been done before.

With such "openness" you may find yourself walking a fine line between a few considerations such as; practical, absurd, creative, gaudy, minimalist, and in some cases genius. You call it based on your ideas and your design, but no question...it is all "out there".

Perhaps we can provide you with a few ideas that you may see as strokes of genius or not. Perhaps these images will inspire you into creating your own strokes of genius. Whatever the case, here are someone else's ideas that may  or may not inspire you.

Mom's Special Decorative Touch

When decorating your child's room, take into consideration your own ideas and your own "look" preferences. It really helps to see what someone else's idea of "pretty" is but you have your own idea of "pretty" and that's the idea to pursue.

The room you are decorating is the room you will walk into everyday and the same room your child will keep as a memory. You may not think of the room as a memory in the present moment, but that's exactly what the room will be in your child's future recollections. It may also seem rather trivial, but I remember how my room looked like growing up and I know my room had my mother's touch.

What does a mother's touch mean? It means that there was something undoubtedly recognizable in the room's decor that said "that's my mom". Whether it is a pattern, a color, a theme, words, or a specific object, what a great gift for your child to infuse a little bit of mom into the decor.

Perhaps there is something special about your child that you want to take as the room's theme - a color, an image, a theme, a pattern? Whatever "it" may be add a little "mom" to it. Childhood is fleeting and if you have the upper hand now in decorating your child's room, take it. Yes, they do grow up so fast and the day may come when your cute little one will grow into the teen years and ask to paint the walls of his or her room black...yikes. So enjoy the early years and add a little bit of mom with a whole lot of heart.

Visit our website Murals For Kids for a large selection of kids wall decor designs and ideas. We provide alternate images for many of our designs to help moms find their unique idea of "pretty".

Here are a few images of one design applied to different decorative themes.

Short On Space in The Kids Room?

If you are short on space in the kids room, here's a great idea that will free up space and make the kids quite content.

The one thing you do need to complete this ingenious project is enough ceiling height. A standard 8 or 9 foot ceiling just won't be enough to achieve this design project.

You could use the same design idea in a room with less ceiling height but it may end up looking just like a modified bunk bed arrangement. So, if you have high celings...read on.

This design is not accomplished by going out to buy the furniture pieces, but it does not seem too difficult to make. Perhaps you can hire a handy-man to build it for you. A goof handy-man can just look at the picture and know exactly what to do.

Something interesting to note - take a look at how there is carpet covering the stairs. It just seems like the best way to go so the kids won't slip on the stairs. Carpet will always be better than a slippery surface - even wood can be slippery. If it looks too much like the cat's play stairs, well then don't do carpet. You could always buy some stick-on non-slip material for the the stair steps.

Also notice that the picture shows a sofa on the first level, but that could always be a bed or even a play area. You can always combine a sleep and play are into one room. How's that for saving space? However you creatively decide to divide the room, you will be using maximum advantage of minimum space. Its a two for one sale of sorts. You get one room with two uses. Not bad for the daunting task of using space wisely.
